COURSE DESCRIPTION Mechanical Basic Design
This course introduces the subject of total design, and introduces the design and selection of various common mechanical engineering components and machine elements. The framework the course concentrates on developing detailed mechanical design skills in the areas of bearings, shafts, gears, seals, belt and chain drives, clutches and brakes, etc. Where standard components are available from manufacturers, the steps necessary for their specification and selection are developed.

COURSE OBJECTIVE Mechanical Basic Design
At the end of this course participants should:
- be able to recognize the iterative steps associated with the design process,
- be able to develop a morphological design chart to aid the development of conceptual solutions,
- be able to Identify loading of machine elements and perform stress and deformation calculations to design safe machines and machine parts
- recognize the scope of available technologies to the designer
